Segway Review

The Segway is a two wheeled electric vehicle designed to help ease traffic congestion in high population areas. It consists of two wheels, a standing platform, hand controls, and an electric engine. Users stand on the platform while their hands work the hand controls. Because the vehicle is compact, it is easy for use on city streets.

When The Segway Was Invented

The Segway was invented by Dean Kamen in 2001, and it was first produced for public consumption in 2002. The freestanding invention with its self-balancing gyroscopic sensors was thought to be very progressive and a cool way to help with our pollution problem. It was also considered to be very expensive.

How Much Does A Segway Cost?

A new Segway will cost you anywhere between 6 to 7 thousand dollars. This is more money than some used cars. Let's face the facts, you are still going to take your car to work when it rains, but if you drive your Segway, you are going to get very wet. Segways are used in some workplaces, mostly large places with different buildings. But most of these types of businesses prefer to use golf carts because you can have more than one rider in a golf cart, you can drink a soda pop on a golf cart, and golf carts have roofs for when it rains.

How Fast Does A Segway Go?

Basically, using a Segway in a busy city is pretty close to running at a high rate of speed, but without the sore muscles and the sweating. The top speed of a Segway is about 13 miles per hour, so driving one on a city street is a bit unpractical. Taking one through the sidewalk is very practical, but if the sidewalk is pretty busy, you can only go as fast as the people in front of you. However, you won't get tired from walking the distance because you are only using the power in your legs to stand. A Segway would be ideal for use at a large campus where you need to go to different buildings during the course of the day. Because there are no seatbelts that come with a Segway (Because a Segway has no seats), you should always wear a helmet when operating one. 14 miles per hour might not seem very fast, but you could still suffer a serious head injury if you wreck into something while going that speed.

How Do You Ride A Segway?

Using a Segway is actually a little easier than learning how to ride a bicycle. The gyroscopic sensors do an outstanding job of maintaining near perfect balance even on slanted sidewalks. To make the Segway go forward, you lean your body forward. To slow down or go backwards, you lean your body backwards. To stop, all you need to do is straighten up. After just a few uses, you get the hang of the unique controls, and will be operating it like a pro.

Can The Segway Go Upstairs?

There is a rumor floating around the internet that a Segway can go up and down stairs. I am here to tell you that this is absolutely true. A Segway can go up and down stairs, all you have to do is pick it up and carry it. You can drive one off of a small sidewalk curve with little problem, but as far as driving one up and down stairs, please do not try it. If you are at the bottom of the stairs, you are going to get very frustrated very quickly, and if you are at the top of the stairs, you are going to hurt yourself, even if you are wearing a helmet.

Are Segways Safe?

I'm not saying Segways aren't safe. They go relatively slow, and the balance is pretty good. (Even for an uncoordinated person like myself.) However, they can't drive through park benches, parked cars, and trashcans. You can and will hurt yourself if you run into one of these things going 12 miles an hour. A good rule of thumb is to pretend that you are just running; only you are running really fast. (Although you can run down stairs, but you can't drive a Segway down them.)

How Long Do The Batteries Last?

Segways have batteries that must be plugged in when not in use. On a full charge, you should be getting about an 8 to 12 mile range from your Segway, and to get a full charge, you will need to keep your Segway plugged in for about 6 hours. The good news is that it doesn't require any gasoline whatsoever.

All in all, Segways are a good step in solving our air pollution problem, and besides that, they are really cool.
